Post  Jagdgeschwader 2nd July 2012, 11:53 am

Some of may you may know but most of you may be oblivious to it that I write in my spare time. I'll be gone from xbox soon but not from PC and to pass the time I may be writing a story for the site to see that stars, who else? All of you. May be interesting, may not be, but the point is that maybe people will get a kick out of a story that involves themselves. Now, here's the thing, since it involves you, the people of UX whoever wants in it has to put up a character, and the character has to be you. Or at least your name. First name. If you don't feel comfortable putting your last name, I'm fine with that, but know that your first name is probably as common as dirt. Now, post a character with a name and background and we'll see what happens. In particular, the only works I've ever written were about human strife and the background I'm going for is post-apocalyptic (cliche, I know, but it's very different from Fallout, Mad Max, Book of Eli, in which it's conceived). The reason being, it is easy to create a new world in the new world so without further ado, if you want a place in this world, I'll go over the baseline of the new world.

Year is 2215

A virus, known simply as The Virus, evolved in the early 1990s to be extremely potent and destroy serotonin and frontal cortex work in the brain. This created a subject which was extremely aggressive and very dangerous but nothing beyond that. Zombie enthusiasts called it a zombie apocalypse, but they weren't zombies either. As stated, the subjects were simply extremely aggressive and dangerous, attempting to kill anything they saw. Some think that it was a genetically engineered virus, some believe it's an abomination from God but that wasn't the point. The world saw different outbreaks which would last a varying number of years. The initial in 1993 in Central Europe, again in 2014, another in 2016, and then 2019 finally ending in 2024. In the progress of these infections, 3,500,000,000 people die worldwide from the outbreaks in a matter of 31 years. One by one, countries fall into anarchy and disarray as electrical grids go offline with nobody to work them, oil ceases to produce with nobody to drill, and mining comes to a stop. Once the country goes into anarchy, it generally doesn't come back, and the stage is set for the new world to be born out of the husk of the old.

Modern man does what it does best and draws lines. 191 years have passed since the last old world country fell apart and in it's place across the globe, thousands of little empires have grown that are run by rich families or something rather. In North America specifically, there are five major players:

United Governments of the West:
Covers Southern Idaho, Oregon, Northern Nevada and North California.

North Mexico:
Covers the upper 25% of Mexico, South California, and parts of Arizona.

The Alaskan Sovereign:
Old Alaska and the Yukon.

New England Territories:
New England

New Islands:
A large nation of island chains covering the Caribbean.

Anywhere not covered by these countries is considered bandit land and is generally not a place where normal people will go. These countries also manage to hold a level of industry for the most part from the old world built from either salvaged tech, or from operations that are out of country. For instance, Bakken oil field is exploited by the UGW and the NET, Aluminum is big in the New Islands because of Bauxite, Oil is also exploited in New Mexico and The Alaskan Sovereign, and Iron is a huge commodity in the NET.

These countries though are also generally poor by today's standards. Cars do exist, but they're generally restricted to military use. Civilian vehicles are hard to come by because they're expensive. Most people ride horses to get around. Innovative science is also in most cases restricted to government work, plastics and such are restricted to military use on a grand scale. In essence, people live almost like they did in the frontier.

There's also a lot of industry in slave labor which takes a turn on the implied definition. "Slaves" aren't called slaves, they're just workers, but the government generally pays "slaves" better. They can just never stop their work. They may work 100 or more hours a week by default. This is in most cases agricultural workers, factory workers and such. If they stop work, the government, which are all (in North America, exception New Islands) ruling families will use nefarious ways for them to continue work, like imprisonment, killing non-essential family members or extradition to bandit country.

Technology also only recently started to advance again. Most equipment you'll find is reproduced 20th century technology and that's not the only thing advancing. Specifically, UGW, NET, and New Mexico are all working to expand their borders and UGW and NET are on the brink of war as it is over Bakken oil field. The story mostly takes place near the Canadian border in North Dakota but can also move. Factions include UGW, the NET, the local population (put down by both sides) and local raiders and unaffiliated. (If unaffiliated, please specify what your purpose is.)

Enough of the background though, what part do you play in this world of uncertainty?

Who are you? What role do you play in the new world and what influence do you have in it? In addition, if characters are needed I may introduce them. Otherwise this works as a forum game now that I think about it. If you have a character, put your input in to how your character would either react and I'll try to implement it as best as I can while maintaining structure.

Enter a character as such:

Name: (First name) optional last name, if needed I'll make one.
DOB:
Place of birth:
Occupation:
Faction:
Nuclear Family/Family/Associates:
Character Description:

The Days After: A Story of Man (Sign-up) Empty Re: The Days After: A Story of Man (Sign-up)

Post  ApocalypseVVolf. 8th July 2012, 8:16 pm

Name: Tyson Corsican
DOB: 7/1/2200
Place of birth: SW Yukon.
Occupation: Junior Detectives.
Faction: TAS
Nuclear Family/Family/Associates/Backstory: Tyson does not have any remaining relatives; he is the last of the Corsican descent.

His father was born in 2172, and his mother in 2170, and both died in 2209.

His father and mother were supporters of the slave rights movements of 2198 until 2209. He was birthed in Whitehorse, with the assistance of a known medical doctor to his parents, through a rebellious movement they were part of called The Road that had formed in (Tyson pre-birth.) ████. In 2209, government authorities recognized that the movement had begun to form a foundation through elven years of combined finances among slaves. They thought it was best to stomp this movement, and display that destruction as an example to install additional fear among the slaves; two birds with one stone. The authorities raided seven ██████ bases throughout three days. The authorities collected at least seventy prisoners throughout the raids, with Tyson among them. The prisoners were later gathered in the main living blocks of the slaves, and executed one by one via beheading. When fifty-nine heads rolled, there remained the children from ages 2-11. Gunnar Hirvasoja was Tyson's close friend among those children, being only one year older, and had lived his entire life as Tyson's friend, and companion. Gunnar & Tyson were two of the six older children that were immediately rushed to interrogation rooms, luckily with non-violent methods. After unsuccessful progress with discovering further rebellion movements; The government gave Tyson, Gunnar, and the other older kids two options: Become recruits for the government authorities, or be tossed back into slave work. Only the oldest child, by the name of Carson Reed, refused. The other five younger children were either sent to medical clinics, or given to some of the richer families with fertility issues looking to adopt. No other rebellious movements have arisen since that day.

Present time, 2215, Tyson and Gunnar serve as junior authorities. With combined hatred for the government for killing their parents, and for themselves for joining their parent's murderers.

Character Description: At his age of fifteen, Tyson stands at 6'0. Has dark brown medium length hair. Green eyes. A fulfilled and narrow face. Weighs 190 pounds with a stocky frame. Is Caucasian, a little more pale than most, tan-wise.

For clothing options, Tyson wears long tight socks covered by hiking boots, fitting stonewashed dark-blue jeans. A white t-shirt, with a thin black hoodie, all covered by a dark-brown leather jacket companied with a few necessary compartments. Additional accessories indclude a pair of fingerless cycle gloves and sunglasses.

Mentally, Tyson would not qualify for psychologically sound, but would neither qualify for being psychologically troubled. He is unpredictable in conversational encounters, like he is corrupted by some kind of social bipolarity. Loving one moment, judging and disappointed the next. Tyson enjoys inquiring and learning about situations relevant to him, and meeting new people. But otherwise will deflect personal questions at given opportunity.

Post  Jagdgeschwader 8th July 2012, 8:58 pm

Name: SSgt. James Desmond
DOB: 26/1/2188
Place of birth: Reno, Nevada
Occupation: Sentry, Expeditionary Force
Faction: UGW
Nuclear Family/Family/Associates: Corporal Allison Desmond, also assigned to the UGW Expeditionary Force; Ambrose Desmond, brother, works in Bakken Oil Field.
Character Description:

2nd son of seven children, James Desmond was born in 2288 in Reno, Nevada to parents just old enough to be successful. Growing up in frontier land of Reno, raiders and bandits were a constant problem and when James was only twelve, most of his family, including his mother, father, two of his brothers and two of his sisters were killed or captured (unknown to him specifically what) by raiders and hauled off elsewhere. Considering himself orphaned, and left to take care of his younger sister Allison and younger brother Ambrose, they put together enough money making themselves resourceful around town to get to Boise, a major city. At the age of 16, James enlisted into the military with no better options as did his sister when she came to that age, and his brother Ambrose found work drilling oil in far off reaches of land unknown to most.

Currently, all three Desmonds have found themselves again reunited after years of separation but it may as well be only cosmically. They almost never cross paths. James himself is 5'8, 170lbs, with brown eyes and black hair. He is scarred mentally and physically from battle with raider tribes who are in the opinion of most civilized people, closer to animals than men. He is diagnosed with 'Frontier Syndrome', a term made by many Government doctors in the west to describe the bitterness, mental anguish and shellshock that occurs in about 85% of combat troops.

Gaining the rank of Staff Sergeant, James is second in command of one of the thousands of squads sent with 4th Infantry Division commanded by General Augustus Mendoza, to defend, if to the death, their assets in the region. Distressed and on edge they wait, as they wait for the call to go to full on war against the NET.

Are your dates correct? DOB is in 2198, making your character 16 and then 17 for events, yet he took part in activities in 2120, 78 years prior?

@Everyone
There is an unlimited amount of characters allowed and I'll implement all of the characters posted as long as they pertain to the conflict in some way described in the character description. However, their importance in the story ultimately depends on how I can use them.

Name: Mordecai Krieger
DOB:2196
Place of birth: He lived in a town called littleton in what used to be New Hampshire
Occupation: Ex-soldier, Now guitarist
Faction: Previously NET, now The locals of the NET
Nuclear Family/Family/Associates: Father (disowned), Mother (deceased), Liam (Older brother), Naomi (girlfriend), Seth (Best friend)(Conspirator)

When Mordecai was born his parents were thrilled that they could each exploit him to their extremes of peace and war. His father buying him a pellet gun to go hunting at 6 and his mom attempting to teach him the piano and guitar by 7.

At the age of 11 his mother died of a fever and caused his father to never see his children in order to attempt to feed them but quickly fell to drinking. he couldn't pay for the children to eat every day, due in large to his newfound drinking habit, so they had to scavenge for food and use their mothers instruments to play on the street.

When Mordecai was 18 his father forced him to join the NET military. he was then sent to clear out a nearby town full of bandits. While there his team of four suffered 2 killed and one wounded. When they came back in a battered car. His father disowned him for failing him and making him look like a fool. After they left the military they started going to different bars and whorehouses and played as entertainers (Seth knows how to play bass). At one bar Mordecai met a girl about his age called Naomi and took a liking to her from the start. She was traveling from TAS and wanted to explore different places. She then stayed with Mordecai and Seth and soon enough Mordecai was able to teach her how to play the piano. Naomi soon went into a relationship with Mordecai and are prospering.

One day, while they were in a bar in bakken, he was confronted by a drunk Seth, who was a member of some conspirators to form a new gov't and help overthrow the old brutal gov't, to join his cause. The ability to give revenge to his father became too sweet to pass up.

Mordecai has an average to slim build and is 5'9". He has Van dyke facial hair (similar to guy fawkes) and reddish-brown shoulder length hair. He is a virtuoso and is inspirational, creative and maybe even Revolutionary.

Interesting, but why is this character living in the middle of the largest fight either nation has ever fought? What is his purpose here since he's not affiliated with the Government anymore?

Just out of curiosity, do characters need to either be in the military or oil field workers? Just want to clarify that I'm not saying that's a bad thing. If you're more interested in writing about that, more power to you.

I was interested in making a character who made and sold soap (whenever I imagine post-apocalyptic stuff, I always fantasize of being a soap-maker. I can't enjoy fantasies if my hands aren't clean in those too). The main problem is that I have no knowledge of the soap-making process (I think you can make it with goat milk, but I had an interest in being in the NET. Not sure if goats live in New England). I also don't know how a soap-maker/vendor could play a part in a story.

I also don't know how a soap-maker/vendor could play a part in a story.
if my conspirator idea takes off you could be using the soap shop as a front for it?

And maybe making napalm or some shit in it too, to take down all the credit card companies and free the world. I'd also have Multiple Personality Disorder and not even know it.

But I'd rather not do that. Feels too familiar. I'd just want to drive my soap-caravan thing town to town and sell my soap. Everybody needs soap, even the military.

Name: Sarah Termous
DOB: 12/3/2193
Place of birth: Bend, Oregon
Occupation: Welder
Faction: Unaligned
Nuclear Family/Family/Associates: Clark Termous (father), Sandra Termous (mother) (UGW nurse) (deceased), Clark Jr. Termous (brother) (student) (deceased), Richard Stygs (adoptive father), Marianne Stygs (adoptive mother), Bobby Stygs (adoptive brother).
Character Description: 5'11", 115 lbs. Dark brown shoulder length hair usually kept in a ponytail. Lean build, with a set of dark blue tribal tattoos covering her right arm. Inherited her father's perceptiveness and her mother's chattiness. Very friendly.

Backstory: Born into a happy family, Sarah's life was torn apart by the death of her mother and brother in a riot. Her father psychologically incapable of taking care of her, Sarah was put in the care of Richard Stygs and his family in 2203. When she turned 18, she bought a motorcycle and left what had become her home for the road, picking up odd jobs here and there to keep food in her belly and gas in her tank. In 2212, Sarah began searching for her father, seeking answers. As it turns out, Clark was searching for her as well, and reunited with her in 2213. However, Sarah could see that Clark still had not dealt with the loss of Sandra and Clark Jr.. With her help, Clark finally came to terms with his, and Sarah's, loss. With her closure attained, Sarah returned to Bend, settling down and eventually taking up her father's old job as a welder. She has been keeping up with Clark through letters, helping him stay in the know about recent events.

Characters can be anything, but to give you an idea there aren't many people in this region right now that are there because it's a nice place. The UGW and the NET are outsourcing oil on a grand scale from Bakken Oil Field in North Dakota and Canada. The UGW has sent 4th Infantry Division, comprised of approximately 10,000 troops along with the 366th Fighter Wing stationed at Mountain Home AFB (Fighter Wing named after the original occupants) and mechanized units. The NET has also sent a division of infantry, approximately 12,000 troops strong along with the 121st Fighter Wing and some mechanized units. These two militaries are literally sitting on the borders of land for each side to use waiting for the call to go to war. Fighters constantly fly the skies observing their opponents activities. Occasional fights happen, and the locals of the area in a rather large town (named Bakken, after the oil field) are caught in the middle harassed by both sides. Not to mention the threat of raiders.

Also, soaps are made from fatty acids, glycerin, and alkali, such as sodium. But it also depends on what kind of soap you're talking about. I learned that on How it's made!

But to answer your question, no. You don't have to be in the military, and you don't have to be an oil worker. You just have to have a good reason for being in this volatile area. Do you live here? Are you a civilian contractor working here? Are you part of the oil drilling? Or do you work in the military as a non-combatant role? Military doesn't equal frontline combat mind you.

The more relevant your character is, the more likely your character will be featured with an important role. This is why most characters in this are aligned with different factions from the list and why most are infantry, slave masters, workers, or something rather.

When I said unlimited characters, I meant an unlimited amount of people can join. One person per character. This character is already described with your other character as a back story character and will be featured as such.

Character Description: After his uncle died by a bandit raid in 2120, Dimitri had taken his estate as well as his wealth, workers, and oil fields. Since he cold walk, he had taken private lessons with swordsmanship and elegance training. He is easy to spot wearing elegant clothing. Dimitri is cold and keeps an emotional distance from people which makes it easier to do task that need to be done such as ordering the burning of villages or punishment to a slave who refuses to work his shift. His sister is the opposite with a kinder, gentle approach and an emotional connection with the people that keep people happy and unwilling to overthrow their employers. He keeps the estate running and functional where she keeps the workers happy and unable to attack their home.

Are your dates correct? DOB is in 2198, making your character 16 and then 17 for events, yet he took part in activities in 2120, 78 years prior?

@Everyone
There is an unlimited amount of characters allowed and I'll implement all of the characters posted as long as they pertain to the conflict in some way described in the character description. However, their importance in the story ultimately depends on how I can use them.

What do you mean?

He took his uncle's estate in 2120, which is 95 years prior to the events in the story. Your character's DOB is in 2198, which means he's only 17. See the inconsistency? I need to know what you mean to provide effective backstory.

Name: Capt. Eric Morrison
DOB: 2/8/2186
Place of birth: Cape Elizabeth, Maine
Occupation: F4E Phantom Pilot
Faction: NET
Nuclear Family/Family/Associates: His father and the friends he's acquired during his station with the 121st.
Character Description:

Born in 2186 in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Eric's mother died at childbirth so he grew up with his fathers military based teachings. His father being an ex-radiomen for the Army who was discharged after he lost a leg to a bandit mine. He taught Eric how to read and write, as well as how to operate a radio. Throughout all this, Eric began to develop a fascination about aircraft. And as such, he decided to enlist into the Air Force when he was old enough.

On Eric's 17th birthday he enlisted into the NET Air Force. He said his goodbyes to his dad and was shipped off to basic military training. It was there he was taught how to fly the F4E Phantom, among other things. At the end of BMT during a training flight, the squadron he was part of encountered massive radio interference which blocked them from communicating with the air field they were supposed to land on. Remembering what his father taught him about radios, Eric was able to get through the interference and contact the air field allowing the squadron to land safely. His actions subsequently earned him the callsign "Cipher".

After he graduated BMT, Eric was assigned to the 121st fighter wing as an F4E Phantom pilot. Years went by and he slowly climbed up to the rank of Captain. Now the year is 2215 and the 121st is being redeployed to the borders of Bakken. Ready to strike against the UGW if the time arises.

Name: Sgt Harry Cloake
D.O.B: 2195
place of birth: London, England
Occupation: Sgt in the NET
Faction: NET
Nuclear family/family/associates: Harry was brought up in london, he lived his life day by day with his family and kept to himself. His father was a NBA(New Britannia alliance) enforcer and being very few guns in England, a expert in hand to hand combat. after years of training with his father Harry was ready to join the enforcers until riots broke out over food and water distribution and the country once looking civilized and orderly, plunged into chaos and anarchy for a second time.

Luckily, Harry's father had hidden a boat along the Thames and had a friend who once told him of a place across the ocean where everything was fine. during the riots him and Harry escaped to the boat and sailed west.

Harry never told the NET scouts what happened on the boat only that signs of raw meat was found in between his teeth when he was quarantined and no sign of his dad. At the age of 18 he joined the NET infantry and quickly rose to the rank of Sargent.

Character description: Harry is 6ft almost black hair and a strong jaw. he is renounced for his ability to take a beating and has been shot twice in the line of duty. Harry is also know to be a bit of a savage and there are many tales among the soldiers of his encounter with bandits and beating their head in with the butt of his gun. although merciless he is loyal to his comrades and a brilliant soldier, he is the first in last out mean machine you do not want to fuck around with, he is cool and collected when under fire but when the enemy get in close he turns into a madman who will tear somebody limb from limb if he can. although it took a while Harry managed to acquire a British L85 assault rifle which he uses instead of standard NET weapons and a Bowie knife his dad gave him for protection.
