Dead VideoGame Society (Current Game: e-hole.net)

Post  Super Mega King on 26th October 2012, 3:17 am

We're now onto the fifth month of the DVGS. Play with us!

All you have to do is download and play. No, seriously, that's it. Feel free to get more creative and post screenshots and videos, and you should definitely talk about it with us, but as long as you're playing, you're doing your part. Who knows, maybe there will be some contests with cool rewards in the future.

Each month will have a theme associated with it, and the games suggested to play will revolve around that theme. Think of it like a book club, except for videogames.

Without further adieu, here's the current update:

March Theme: Metal Gear

Current Game: Metal Gear Solid

Emulator: http://www.emucr.com/search/label/PCSX-Reloaded/
ISO:
Disc 1 http://coolrom.com/roms/psx/38924/Metal_Gear_Solid_(Disc_1)_(v1.1).php
Disc 2 http://coolrom.com/roms/psx/39295/Metal_Gear_Solid_(Disc_2)_(v1.1).php

To Save on the PSX Emulator PCSX

NOTE This game has two discs, so you will need to save using a bios. Instructions on how to do so are below.
Spoiler:
The emulator for PSX, PCSX, I linked is designed to emulate the PSX, but does it natively without a bios. To get the memory card to work, you need to install a bios. For the PSX, download this mediafire.com ?5u2p200uryaf58h and unzip it to the folder labeled "bios" in your PSX folder. Then, in Configuration, click Plugin/Bios, and select SCHP 10001 as your bios. Then, under memcard, click "Format MCD" under Memory Card 1 and 2. Should be able to save and load normally, as if it were a regular PSX!

UPDATE For those of you having trouble getting Metal Gear to work correctly-

1. Try this alternate emulator. http://psxemulator.gazaxian.com/
2. If emulation still doesn't work try getting a copy of the PC version of MGS.

Any questions or concerns can be directed at any person in the list below.

Please feel free to participate and provide feedback. There's no obligation here. Chill and have fun.

Ready for this?

We sunset riders now.

>2012
>Not picking Cormano

Anyway, by the time you read this, I will have updated the OP with honor rules that apply to every game. It's your basic stuff: no save states, no turboboosting, etc.

Sunset Riders: Simon Greedwell
Spoiler:

$10,000? In what year? Geez.

You start with one shotgun (as Cormano, not sure if it differs per character) that shoots green bullets - subsequent upgrades give you duel-wielding shotguns, faster bullets, etc. The top left (under your score counter) shows two pistols, which represents the amount of lives you have. It's a one-hit-kill kind of game; one bad dodge and you're done.

Entering these doors gives you points and powerups - specifically, the gun surrounded by a gold star in the second picture is what increases your weapon efficiency. To jump to higher ledges, simply look directly up and hit the jump button. Tip: Once you start shooting purple bullets, you can rapid fire, so you may as well spam that trigger.

sup

For the rest of level one, just spam that trigger and point at anything that moves. Watch out for the dynamite, that's the most surprising killer. You can pick up dynamite and throw it at enemies, but it's pretty ineffective - if you pick it up, might as well throw it behind you.

Oh, and...

that happens.

"It's time to pay."

Boss fight time.

The top two doors produce enemies that shoot at you. If you're quick, you can kill them before they got a shot off, which is quite nice. The goal here is to blast away the pink barrels beneath the boss, allowing you a shot directly on him. Careful, though; the pink barrels will start flashing red rapidly before they fall, and when they fall, they'll kill you if you're standing directly underneath them.

The enemies stopped spawning for me when I took care of the barrels, allowing me to easily kill the boss.

"Bury me with my money."

Not likely.

That's level one.

It's really easy to avoid getting hit before the first boss. After one or two times you'll do level one flawlessly. If you die at or before the boss, might as well restart; you get three credits, and I think that's to play the entire game.

Feel free to post your own experiences!

Sunset Riders: Hawkeye Hank Hatfield

Spoiler:

I bet his favorite videogame is Team Fortress 2. Right guys? Right? Get it?

So this level's gimmick is that you ride a horse. Jumping causes the horse to jump, moving left or right causes the horse to head to either direction of the screen, yada yada yada...

This level is much harder than the first one.

You basically have two major things to look out for.

1.) The guy in the front will throw logs at you, and then shoot at you. You can jump over the logs and bullets, but it's best to try to kill him immediately.

2.) There will be horseback riders above and below you that will shoot you diagonally - they're actually pretty hard to kill and kind of hard to dodge. Careful. Took me a few tries to do well on this level because of these guys.

Rinse repeat for a little while. This level's pretty short.

A train will come riding by with a bunch of enemies that are REALLY easy to dispatch -- first time I got here, I don't think any of them got a shot off. You're basically in the home stretch when you see this thing.

"Draw pilgrim!"

This boss is actually pretty easy.

Like the last boss, he'll have enemies spawning from his left and right. They die easily and are pretty easily dodged. Also like the last boss, they spawn in a finite amount, so you may want to focus on killing them all before you even worry about the boss.

As for Hank Hatfield, he's only vulnerable when popping out to shoot (as depicted in second pic). Take advantage of it, and be careful. The closer he is to death, the faster he fires.

hank no

He almost got me here. When he's almost dead, he jumps down and gets up close and personal. Be careful. He doesn't fire much, but being as close as he is he can be tricky to dodge.

"You got me!"

Cormano's kind of a dick.

Wow. $30,000 now? I can probably retire. Or not.

Sunset Riders: Dark Horse
Spoiler:

This guy is so gay.

So this level doesn't really have much to comment on. There's more enemies, more obstacles, and more powerups: the key is to go slow.

Not many enemies are depicted because there was so much going on screen it was hard to get screencaps. See that oil spill in the last picture?

Yeah. Fire. You have to use the rope to cross. Unfortunately, some badguys are waiting for you at the other end.

During this jump animation, I believe you're invulnerable. Use that while dodging the bullets.

"You in heap big trouble!"

This boss isn't that bad.

Jump up here and focus on killing the enemies in the window. With two fully powered shotguns, you can pop them all before they get a shot off. Avoid the gay horse guy until they're dead, then focus your attention on him.

Won't be long before you kill him.

"Me in heap big trouble!"

Did I just let him go...?

Who cares? I got paid, apparently.

A door bursts open.

"Oh! Those terrible men... please help."
"Alright ma'am. Don't worry about it."

Carmono the hero enters the tavern, where the next boss awaits.

At this point a few of us are deciding to use save states. When you get a game over in the game, you start all the way back at the beginning; with how hard the game is, it's basically impossible to beat it without sucking all the fun out of it unless you use save states. Remember, this is a game designed for co-op play.

Sunset Riders: The Smith Bros
Spoiler:

Two bosses? And no level? Whoo-boy.

The two bros are on either side of the room with some disposable henchmen on the chandelier. In the center of the room is a tied up woman who, when freed, gives a weapon bonus. The "tavern" signs beneath each brother serves as a shield.

And I died, and started all the way back at the beginning, where Carmano learned the power of save states.

TIME SKIP

So anyway, these guys throw bombs and fire at you. The fire guy (right) is easy, but the bomb guy is far from it. Probably a better strategy would be to kill the bomb guy first, because when one brother dies, the other starts chucking his thing rapidly. This boss is basically impossible with rapid fire bombs coming at you. Unless you use save states.

You can ride the chandelier like so, or swing from it like it's a rope.

Chalk another victory to the infallible Carmano.

How risque.

"Oh! You boys are so kind. I'll tell you a secret. A huge reward is being offered for Richard Rose. But be careful. He always has three sidekicks with him."

Sounds like a plot device.

Sunset Riders: El Greco
Spoiler:

So we get this new boss screen previewing the rest of the game for us. Yay!

On a train. This level's pretty fun, and pretty short.

Careful for these windows. Some guys will pop beneath your feet and try to get a cheap shot on you.

That log? Jump over it. It will kill you.

Before long, you're looking at the (apparently) infamous El Greco.

"Adios, amigo!"

He has a shield. He doesn't have a cape. The shield blocks all blows, but with proper movement you can shoot beneath it or get behind the guy.

No minions. Only boss so far with absolutely none. In fact, he also only has one attack.

He only does it if you spend too much time standing directly in front of it. Solution: don't.

Before long, he dies.

"Adios, amigo!"

Spoken like a true bro.

See you later, space cowboy.

Is there any who can stop the handsome Carmano?

Sunset Riders: Chief Wigwam
Spoiler:

Chief Wigwam? Seriously?

Falling rocks. Great start.

Beyond the falling rocks, there's not much new to this level, except it's more of a vertical than horizontal level. Very cool setting, climbing a rock mountain. The bomb guys are regular enemies now, and they're the worst thing in the world.

Let's take a moment with Carmano to marvel in this beautiful SNES waterfall.

It's the return of the rope. This one's a bit more complicated, with more enemies underfoot, but the jump trick still works.

All the bosses so far have been pretty easy. Time for another breezy boss fight. Right? Right?

"Get ready for a pow-wow!"

This boss is the most concentrated piece of bullshit ever. He's quick, throws knives that are nearly impossible to dodge, and blocks almost every attack.

Fuck knives.

I really don't know what to say. Without save states, I wouldn't have beat this boss. I don't even know how to hurt him. I crouched and spammed attack like in the above picture, and that seemed to be the only way to do any damage.

After a long time of bullshit...

"I'm pow-wowed out!"

Time to murder this guy.

"Don't shoot my brother. He's only following orders."
"Alright ma'am. We won't shoot him."

Carmano and his non-existent bounty hunter friends are merciful deities.

Dance the night away.

The poster did say "dead OR alive." Money pls.
