You're not actually taking their advice to go to Detroit, right? I really gotta advise against that. I'm pretty sure it's a joke for one, since Detroit is looked down upon by us in the US. For two, there really doesn't seem to be any worthwhile reason to go to such a dangerous place. To my knowledge there's nothing cool in Detroit except maybe the ruins of Detroit.

Hopefully it's just a joke though. For some reason I feel an obligation to warn people about Detroit.

Can't tell you about New York, except it's expensive.

Detroit isn't really as bad as everyone says, it's just an industrial city, no different than Bethesda or Lima. Doesn't have many tourist attractions because it doesn't need them.

San Diego is my city, and I prefer it the most out of the three. Lots to do there and not everything requires you to be made of money like New York.


If you want a city not to go to, try St. Louis. It actually has the highest murder rate in the country. All three cities have bad neighborhoods, but if you stick to tourist attractions, you'll avoid them all.

Speaking personally though from San Diego, you'll want to avoid:

Logan Heights
City Heights
Encanto maybe, but it just seems more poor than anything. You still see some undesirable types roaming about.

So long as you stay close to paved roads and bright lights, you will be safe and sound. Just don't leave your doors unlocked and don't wander off by yourself, especially since it will be blatantly obvious that you're not from around here. Tourists are targets around here, not locals.

Alot of our touristy spots aren't in Detroit though, places like theme parks and resorts are up North, closer to water. As Jag said, D-town is industrial, and other revenue is really just raked in through local bars/businesses and the sports scene. (Comerica, Joe Luis, Pontiac Silverdome)
