Re: Earthquake
Wow kinda figured this would be the first topic. I felt it a little bit, but i'm guessing people who live in Virginia really felt it a lot.
(and no it wasn't as bad as NZ or Japan, just thought i'd get this disclaimer out there. It was a 5.9 magnitude, and now CNN has some drama to unfold for another 8 hours of breaking news)...

Re: Earthquake
I didn't feel anything, but that's probably because I live on the opposite side of the country. News is making it sound pretty bad though.

Re: Earthquake
All these Earthquakes happening everywhere (Japan, Haiti, New Zealand, Virginia, etc..) just gets me thinking more and more how screwed San Andreas is in the near future. Fault line is long overdue, and every other part of the plate has moved by now. Could be a possiblility a 10.0 might be broken

It's actually impossible to have a 10.0 on Earth without the planet splitting (which won't happen, obviously.)
I believe the max is 9.2-9.3, and if it's located near the surface it will pretty much flatten cities.
So yeah, don't live near California for a couple hundred years.

Now you know what us Cantabrians have been thinking about since September (except our major fault line is the Southern Alps and runs the entirety of the South Island)

While I can agree on the 10.0 point, there can still be earthquakes in the mid to upper 9's.
In 1960 for example, Chile had a 9.5 magnitude quake, which was the record for only the 20th century. Could've been bigger ones back then before record keeping began.

Meatshield718 wrote:Hmm. Must be 9.5 then.
Just because it is the largest on record (after 1900) doesn't mean it is the maximum magnitude possible. Could've been even bigger ones before 1900 that weren't recorded.
I wouldn't count a 9.6 or 9.7 out.

There was an earthquake in LA not too long ago. As in a few years back. It was in the 8s but it wasn't reported on much after that day.

Re: Earthquake
There was a natural cycle of "Major Earthquake Predictions" (major being near the top end of the scale), that shows San Andres is very overdue for a once in a century (or every other century) major earthquake around a 9.0 magnitude. Considering the NZ and Japan quakes were all on the same plate, it is only a matter of time before the stress in the San Andreas fault area becomes too much, and ruptures.

Re: Earthquake
Remember the LA earthquake back in the 90s?

While it wasn't 'strong', it had a fast acceleration rate, and was a pretty significant earthquake. Although I wouldn't be surprised if something else happened.
