I just saw this on TV. How is it acceptable to put racial slurs on the same boat as 'retard'? And when the hell was being gay, and jewish a 'race'?

Can't believe people are up in arms over a word that isn't even used to directly insult the mentally retarded. In fact why not have someone in a wheelchair in the video too? Do physically retarded people not count? Anyone else catch this commercial?

Few things.

1. Don't ever make a title like this again on our forums.
2. Never did she say those words were racist, she said the were used to insult a minority group. Which is true.
3. For all you know, that person on the left is handicapped, and she's sitting in a chair instead of a wheel-chair.
4. Being mentally retarded is a physical handicap, there is no such thing as "Physical retardation".

I don't think you should post something like this again, at least before you understand it.

Simply put, calling someone a 'retard' is arguably an insult to somebody actually mentally retarded.

Not like I'm going to stop calling people gay, retarded, or jews anytime soon.

They're saying the word retard is the same as a racial slur. When someone says 'n***er' they're going out of the way to insult african americans. Same with 'k*ke' for jews, etc.

I just can't believe the time and effort being put toward a word that's no where near as insulting as an actual racial slur.

Like I said, it's arguably offensive. It's also 'minority' slurs, not just racial.

But yea it's a pet-peeve when people are on their high horse saying a certain word is offensive to a group of people. It just feels like they're giving the word 'retard' more power to be offensive.

They may be, and you're not teetering on a ban, because by doing this they might be giving more power to the word.

@ Cry, the word has been kind of manipulated, but physical retardation would be from something like Parkinson's or Polio. It used to be the correct term for something like that. Not anymore really. :/

I think he's been trying to get a zombies game going, but can't because eaustinn keeps locking his events threads (rightfully so it seems, because he apparently doesn't fulfill the requirements to host a community game. I think you have to be at at least one staff hosted game to host community games, and I've never seen him there). Also, because he only announces it like an hour ahead of time.

He must've either gotten almost nobody in his lobby, or seen that the online users are less than 50, and determined there are less than 50 people in the group.

You have obviously never met a Jew, and talked to them about there religion. Most Jews see themselves as being a race, based solely on the fact that they all share many cultural and societal expectations.

Also I find that retard is no different from slappy the squirrel/funky elephant. Many people still use the word slappy the squirrel/funky elephant either as a friend to friend thing(way to be ignorant), or as a slur. Sounds like the word retard to me. Frankly if you use any of these words to insult someone, you obviously have a small vocabulary, and are ignorant beyond belief.

Ehh i've been avoiding this thread long enough.

This is definitely a complicated issue, one where all answers are tedious. First off, a "race" is loosely defined as "Each of the major divisions of humankind, having distinct physical characteristics.", so technically these are all races (although geographic location usually has something to do with it). Nevertheless, some people do take offense to certain words, and it is important to respect that in others. Granted the "R-word" is the most controversial of them all (in that whether is it "really bad" of not) but said to the wrong person, it definitely can raise offense.

Best thing to do is just avoid these words all together; I personally don't say any of them much. besides, there are many other synonyms for all these words in the English language, that can be used, that are far less offensive (eg: "mentally challenged").

It is still touchy issue though.
