I think it's just culture. Though logically it makes sense, by the standards of Jesus, it is unholy and sadistic. To get rid of it now may cause the pope to kill himself.
You are also questioning the country that considers pizza to be a vegetable and the same country that spawned George Bush and Bill Clinton.

I am sure Finland has it's own weird culture standards, as well.
