It should, if it's advertised as one. Eg. Hadcore Mode in New Vegas...

Well seeing as most games are too easy I think there needs to be a bit of a balance here. I can count on one hand how many games are "tactically realistic".

Again, the one complaint I always hear about Fallout is that it always ends up being way too easy after level 10 and essentially not much fun anymore.

Well it's no fun if your a good guy. If your bad at like level 40 something you kill off the world and then it's no fun.

If it was realistic or had settings for such then it wouldn't be another RPG thing. This was also the complaint for Skyrim because level 15 it became easy no matter what you did.

Can somebody please explain to me without a straw man argument why suddenly it's not an RPG once you become fragile. RPG means "Role Playing Game". Where in there does it say that you have to be a complete and total badass?

There's a fine line between realism and difficulty.

I think you've confusing realism with difficulty, really. Fallout isn't about "tactical realism", it's post-apocalyptic fiction. We've got Death Claws and Super Mutants running around all over the place. There's no need for any realism or whatever. You want tactical realism? Play ARMA.

As far as the problem with difficulty it's all because of level scaling.

didn't read most of the topic, feel free to ignore me

Fallout 3 is not light hearted, neither is New Vegas in any sense. Fallout just likes to make you into a complete and total badass no matter what happens.

If you honestly think that Fallout is a light hearted tromp through a nuclear wasteland, especially with everything that happens, and the situation at hand, then you're either sociopathic or completely nuts.

It pretty much is a light-hearted romp through a nuclear wasteland. That's why humor is a big part of Fallout. You know, the whole Old World Blues DLC? The ridiculousness of the Liberty Prime? The tunnel snakes? Need I go on?

Also you really want to replace a creative inventory system with boring, obnoxious menus?

Your idea of Fallout with all your changes is boring, Jag. Too much realism is boring.

Jag, you should read "The Road." It's a true horrific post-apocalyptic wasteland story. Read that and you'll feel ashamed that you ever called Fallout anything other than lighthearted.

The whole Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Lonesome Road, broken families, ongoing conflict in the Mojave Wasteland, injured NCR troopers placed over landmines, torturing soldiers, slavery in DC, ghouls, the starving and dying across the lands, Super Mutant creation, vault experiments, day to day survival, follower stories, New Vegas, towns threatened by marauders, towns razed by marauders, the raiders, baby carriages rigged to explode with the sound of a crying baby on a tape recorder, the Brotherhood of Steel's war on Super Mutants, the BoS schism, Project Purity, Nipton, NCR at Bitter Springs...

But if you think that's funny, then you've been playing games too long.

I could do this for days. Sorry, Fallout is not based on humor. I can think of pages of things not funny as opposed to things that are. Tunnel Snakes? Really? That's Butch's stupid gang from the vault that he made as a kid, then tried to naively start in the wasteland.

Yeah, sorry, you're definitely giving it much more credit than is due. Most of those things are acted out at least in a decently-lighthearted manner. I'll say that it does have some serious moments, but it's not like Fallout is some artistic, realistic survival-horror game. It's lighthearted. For as many examples of "holy shit look at how deep and dark this is" you can provide, I can provide a "lol that's pretty cool" example.

Again, please read The Road then try to compare Fallout to some horrific post-apocalyptic story.

BUT DUUUDE! Look at Dead Money!

I mean, it's some sadistic old guy going for all the gold, and you team up with some bipolar supermutant, a mute, and a singing ghoul. 3 deep 5 me.

Sorry dude, but the more fallout come out, the more they add comedy. That's not a bad thing though. I really enjoy the comedy in Fallout. It just isn't the most serious game I've played. Nowhere close. :/

Your dehydration level has increased.

For the most part, when you see someone's head explode in Fallout, the reaction isn't "Holy shit, that's graphic as hell.". It might have dark stuff like booby trapped corpses and rape, but it's also absolutely full of comic relief. Like in Fallout 3, that old guy with the slave collar on. If you choose the line "Maybe I can get it off if I just stick this screwdriver in there..." he goes "Oh" and his head explodes. That's pretty fucked up, but it's played for laughs. Same thing as Liberty Prime talking about eliminating Chinese invaders while blowing away Enclave soldiers. The game doesn't take itself all that seriously.

But if there's an optional Hardcore mode for players who want more realism (as opposed to just wanting more of a challenge, in which case you could up the difficulty), I don't see the problem with it actually being realistic. There aren't a lot of realistic, survival based games available. There's pretty much just DayZ.

I didn't mean to come into this topic and upset you. I took offense when I did read through the topic and found that you were insulting everyone that disagreed with you, calling them sociopaths and claiming they'd "been playing games too long."

Seriously, what's with all this 'tactics tactics tactics' BS? If you want tactical realism, play ARMA. If you want tactical realism in a Zombie/Apocalyptic setting, play DayZ. Fallout is, at heart, not tactically realistic. If fallout was made tactically realistic your character would develop cancer quickly. Tenpenny's nuke plan would have sent bits of Megaton blasting in every direction, possibly damaging Tenpenny's 'crown jewel'. The sole reason Fallout ISN'T Tactically Realistic is because (in my honest opinion) Tactical Realism is a very specialist market.

That is my take on this argument. Good Day.
