Vladimir Kroskov's Story, EPISODE 2 Empty Vladimir Kroskov's Story, EPISODE 2

Post  Bladewind23 31st July 2010, 6:58 am

(Its 5 in the fuckin morning, I'm bored, lets do this shit.)

Prologue.

Vladimir awoke to the sounds of stable electronic beeping and a compressor. Without opening his eyes he felt around his stomach, it was wrapped heavily in bandage and was completely numb. His head was swimming and he felt like he was going to vomit, he opened his eyes for a moment, he was in a small enclosed room. He sat up, soon to find out he wasn't in a room at all, but the back of an ambulance. "Lay the FUCK back down!" Said a deep voice from the front. Vladimir saw two figures in the cab, but didn't waste any time in complying. "Last thing I need is your ass dying on me when I drove all the way the fuck out here." The same voice repeated. Vladimir felt a tube in his arm and a few vital monitors attached to his chest. He concentrated on his breathing for a few moments and, without knowing, fell asleep again.

The ambulance kept on, driving north from where it had picked up Vladimir. Every tree in sight was bent over or broken from the shockwave of the blast. A Geiger counter in the front was making ticks every few seconds, the radiation from the blast extended as far out as Alderney. There were tons of dead infected bodies sprawled across the streets and sidewalks. Even the slightest bit of radiation had instantly killed them, due to the defects to their bodily systems. Even with this fact, not all of the Infected had been destroyed, there were still thousands left, a fact that the remaining survivors and the coming military were soon to find out...

Chapter One

A lone helicopter landed at the heavily barricaded hospital. A large squad of infantry men walked out, all holding M4's and M16's in their hands. The commanding officer stepped out last, he carried a silver-plated M9 and wore digital camouflage instead of the Marpat that the other soldiers wore. After further speaking the higher ranked officer was addressed as Commander Warsaw. A soldier next to him, by the name of Captain Vance, was informing him of the situation. The Commander's face grew more serious and grave with every word, but the conversation soon ended, and Captain Vance lead the other soldiers inside the hospital. Commander Warsaw turned and headed to the barricade, climbing the stairs up into one of the watchtowers. The other soldiers inside the tower saluted him then went back to watch. Warsaw only stared out at the misty, humid land before them.

Vladimir was sitting in the lobby of the hospital, outfitted with complete Military gear. Including body armor, grenades, ammunition, and anything else he might need. He was cradling the same M4 that he had brought from home in his hands. He listened to the radio chatter through the headset that was implanted in his new helmet, he didn't mutter a word. He was now being addressed as Specialist Kroskov, due to the fact that he had been in contact with the infected, and was apparently immune. He was also given command of a small squad of four soldiers, including himself, that were all proven to be immune. They would be the main force in driving the infected to Hell once and for all. As for Josef and Voychek, they had both been horribly injured, Josef was surprisingly alive after being tossed out of the chopper. Both Voychek and Josef had been sent back home, to Vladivostok, where the city had been barricaded with hundred-foot tall concrete walls. Every country still surviving in the world had forgotten their differences and were working together.

Vladimir stood up out of his chair as Captain Vance and the new squad came inside, he stood in salute and the rest of Vladimir's squad did the same. "At ease, Kroskov." Vance stated. "I hear that you are the Specialist here." He continued. "That's correct, sir." Vladimir replied. "The situation is extremely volatile, Kroskov, the missile did not perform to our expectations. It was a new prototype, not nuclear, not atom, but still extremely radioactive, we expected all of the radiation to eliminate these infected, but due to our thermal sensors still picking up very big spikes of semi-human activity, it has obviously failed. The Captain said, his face very serious and lacking emotion. Vladimir only nodded and the Captain continued with his speech. "For even further bad news, the radiation is going to be there for a very long time so any advance into Algonquin is strictly prohibited, the river between Alderney and Algonquin has been assigned as a temporary no-fly zone. Anyway, your assignment as of this point is to advance underground, to where we believe the source of these infected are. Apparently hundreds of thousands of infected found underground tunnels and caves to stand around in during no-activity times. These places sheltered them from the radiation the bomb left behind, thus far the infected are a bit smarter than we thought, they know that they need shelter, they know where danger is. The good news is they still can't resist to go on a full-bearing charge if they spot a human or smell blood, that's why so many of them are manslaughtered in the streets. Now, you know what your assignment is, we will airlift you out of here at 0800, 20 hours from now." Vance finished, Vladimir's squad saluted once more before sitting back down.

Chapter Two

The air outside was heavy with the smell of death. The geiger counters no longer ticked, Alderney had lost much of the radiation. Vladimir and the other three were slowly advancing through the city streets, guns at the ready. So far there wasn't a sound. A complete, eerie silence hung over the area for miles.

The three included in the group besides Vladimir were Corporal Tyler, PFC Williams, and Private Vance, the daughter of Captain Vance. Everyone there were in the same age group, Vladimir being the oldest.

The four rounded yet another corner, they had been advancing toward the North, still lacking any Infected contact. Eventually they came across something that surprised them, up on the rooftops, a human figure sitting on the edge, their feet dangling and swinging back and forth. The person was sitting up, head down with a hat and long hair covering their eyes, they were playing an acoustic guitar endlessly. Vladimir stopped and looked up at him, still very dumbfounded. The other three occasionally looked up at him but watched the area moreover. "Sir...? Might I ask what you are doing?" Vladimir called up at him. The person made no attempt to answer, he kept playing as if he hadn't heard a word. Vladimir called up to him again, trying to get some type of response out of the person. He still said nothing, but he raised his hand up and dropped a piece of paper, folded like an airplane. It glided down, making many loops and turns before landing effortlessly on the ground at Vlad's feet. The man resumed playing afterward, and Vladimir picked up the plane, examining it. He then unfolded it, and words were scribbled on the paper in blood. It simply read 'Leave me be.' and was signed LK. Vladimir dropped the paper to the ground and looked back up, looking at this so-called LK for a moment longer. Vladimir decided that he would do just that, and he motioned with his hand for the rest to follow, they heard the lonely sound of the guitar playing for even more city blocks to come.

Soon the four came across their first Infected, it wasn't alone. A total of five Infected came running down the street, screaming and snarling. Vladimir and the others immediately crouched down and took aim. Vladimir was the first to fire on the lead Infected, letting out a three-round burst. The leader dodged to the side, the Captain wasn't lying about the intelligence. Vladimir read the movement and shot three more rounds to the Infected's new position, all three rounds shot into the head of the creature. It recoiled backwards and landed on its back, deceased. Vance took down two others, it was obvious that the following ones were not as smart. Williams and Tyler finished off the last of them. One of the Infected had survived heavily wounded, it was sprawling on the ground like a fish out of water. It was howling and screaming louder than before, and Vladimir didn't hesitate to take action. He walked over and aimed his gun at the head of the Infected, the creature stopped howling and stared into the barrel of the weapon. A single bullet disappeared into its forehead and it went completely limp. Everyone reloaded their weapons, and soon heard shuffling in the alleys nearby. They saw Infected run past the gaps in the buildings, and upon looking down the street they spotted even more running towards them.

Chapter Two Part 2

The infected beings were coming closer and closer at an alarmingly fast rate, the others in the alleys turned and began to pour out of them. Beads of sweat poured down the faces of Vladimir and the others. There was only one escape route behind them, and Vladimir immediately tapped the shoulders of the other three and they all began to run. They ran as fast as they could onto another street, and Vladimir glanced back only to see a wave of Infected turn the same corner some distance behind them. He ran even faster and the others were struggling to keep up. Vladimir pointed to a nearby alley and they all made a quick turn into it, Vance was the first to grab the nearest ladder leading up to an apartment fire exit. Vladimir helped her up and then crouched down, pointing his weapon at the alley entrance, Williams was second to go up but Tyler stayed down with Vlad, in the same stance. A small wave of Infected missed the alley and kept running, but a lone one stopped and stared into it, looking at the crouching humans with rage. The largest wave followed this one's actions, they hesitated for a moment, not uttering a sound. Tyler suddenly jumped up with panic and grabbed onto the ladder, climbing up. The sudden noise startled the Infected beings and they all began to run down the alley, Vladimir opened fire instantly. Creature after creature stumbled over and fell to the ground, riddled with bullets. Vance and the others stopped their ascent and fired from above, and Vladimir took his chance to climb the ladder. He just made it up when yet another swarm of infected clogged up the entire alley.

The roof of the apartment building was covered in graffiti S.O.S. signals, which wasn't much of a surprise. Williams and Tyler were sitting up against an old A/C unit while Vance was walking around relaying information over the radio. Vladimir was standing near the fire escape with his gun constantly at the ready, most of the infected had tried to clamber up but had been shot on the stairs. The roof access door was hastily boarded up and every now and then there was a sound of an Infected banging on it, this was soon ended with a quick burst-fire through the door. "They're going to try and send us some air support, there are more Infected left than they had predicted." Vance announced after she had finished with the radio, everyone else nodded their heads. Williams and Tyler got up and put their gear back on that they had taken off to rest.

Chapter Three

A lone UH-60 was making its way across the city, flying low and at a steady pace. The soldiers on the side turrets slowly scanned the ground, looking for any valid targets. The pilot sent a few coordinate numbers over the radio before increasing the helicopter's speed slightly. The chopper was flying increasingly low, dangerously passing just a few feet above the buildings. A warning light in the cockpit came on, alerting the pilot to the altitude, he flipped a switch and the light turned off.

One particular building was infested with Infected, including the roof. As the helicopter approached the Infected on the roof took notice. One daredevil creature began to sprint towards the chopper, not paying any mind to the amount of room it actually had to run. The helicopter was only a few yards away from the roof, neither the pilot or co-pilot noticed the single Infected that was running straight at them. The helicopter was now nearing the very edge of the roof, flying only a few feet above it. The Infected met the lip and jumped, flying straight at the windscreen of the helicopter. The pilot was the the first to notice and he pulled the control stick to the left, but his reactions were too slow, the entire body of the Infected slammed into the windscreen, splattering blood all over the whole thing. The metal supporting the windscreen collapsed and the right engine began to smoke. The pilot yanked the radio microphone from the dash and reported the situation before giving some coordinates. The crew were going to be forced to make an emergency landing, onto the roof of the infested building.

The chopper descended ever lower before touching down onto the roof, the gunners immediately opened fire, dispatching every Infected in sight. Even more of them poured out of the roof access door, and were quickly dismembered and beheaded by the spray of minigun fire. A few miles away Vladimir's squad heard all of this going on, and Vance received some information over the radio. "We have a new assignment, our evac team has been forced to make an emergency landing on the roof of a highrise building nearby, its actually what we are hearing right now." She said, pointing off in the direction of the building. Vladimir nodded and he motioned for the rest of the squad to follow, he walked over to the emergency exit stairs and began to descend.

Chapter Three Continued

Sounds of mini-gun fire continued to echo through the streets as Vladimir and the rest approached the front door to the high-rise building. Vladimir kicked the door open and quickly searched the front room through the iron-sights on his weapon. He made a motion with his hand and the other three advanced ahead of him. Vladimir searched the dark room for a door to the stairwell, which didn't take him long. He turned the handle and the door was shoved open, a screaming and desperate Infected staggered through the door and fell to the ground. It was littered with bullet holes and had been trying to escape, sounds of slower footsteps came from the stairwell and Vladimir stepped inside. He shined the flashlight on his gun up through the shaft, another flashlight shined down from above. "Identify yourself! Or we will open fire!" The voice came from the light that was shining down. "Special Experience Operative Kroskov, United States Military!" Vladimir called upwards. No voice came back but the footsteps resumed, Vladimir and the others backed away from the door and waited.

The only two remaining from the helicopter were the co-pilot and gunner, by the names of Private Dell and Corporal Manx. Vance reported all of the necessary information to Command, the next thing was to find a way back to base. The squad's assignment to drive the Infected underground was recalled, four people was obviously not going to be enough. With their new information received the group headed out, including the two new soldiers that joined them. The two from the helicopter only had a pistol and a sub-machine gun on hand, much to their disadvantage.

The street was still mostly vacant except for dead bodies of both sides littering the streets. The air was silent as the group walked through the many intersections of the city. Fog had made its way in-between the buildings, and the sun was lowering toward the horizon. Vladimir stopped finally after tens of blocks went by, the others also stopped and looked at him in wonder, waiting for him to speak. Vladimir said nothing but turned his attention to the two vehicles at his right. He walked over to the window of the first one and tried the door, it refused to open. He took the butt of his gun and slammed it through the glass, he pulled up on the lock of the door and it finally opened. The car was mostly clean except for bits of trash from pre-outbreak victims. Surprisingly the key was inside, Vladimir took hold of it and turned it. The engine hesitated but eventually started, he stepped out of the car and looked at the rest of the group. "Alright, I want Vance and Williams to ride with me and Tyler, Dell, and Manx in the other car behind us." Vladimir said, with this being stated Tyler went over to the other car. The door was unlocked but the key was nowhere to be found, he continued to hotwire the vehicle and it came to life. Everyone piled into the cars, making a few last minute checks before going. Vladimir pulled off first and Tyler, driving the car behind them, was quick to follow.

Chapter Four

Upon returning to base the group noticed a rise in military population in the area, not only were troops filling the entire inside of the base itself but armored vehicles with infantry escort were now patrolling the streets nearby. Less and less Infected individuals were anywhere near the base, but radiation from the bomb was slowly receding. Infected on Alderney Island were no longer dying from prolonged outside exposure. With this fact in mind the Infected were more daring, with small hordes attacking the base every so often, but this still had no lasting effect on the humans.

The next assignment was linked to an entire armored division, Vladimir and his squad were riding shotgun on a Bradley with two more Bradleys and an Abrams in trail. Dell and Manx were transferred to another helicopter division. The lead Bradley was outfitted with a TOW launcher using an incendiary warhead and high-explosive 30mm rounds in the cannon instead of the standard 30mm dummy shells. It was also assigned a light supply vehicle to make sure it never ran out of ammo. The other armored vehicles in the division were outfitted with standard equipment, rumor was that command didn't expect the others to make it.

(To be continued soon, god damn writer's block.)

Chapter Four Continued

The armored vehicles were still parading through the streets, there was hardly any Infected contact as of yet. The radio officer was constantly relaying information back to home base. Vladimir was sitting on the side of the lead Bradley, his attention stuck to the passing street surface. He began to hear the same lonely guitar strum that he had heard long ago, sure enough, upon looking up the same man as before was on a different roof. Still playing and swinging his legs back and forth, the other military personnel payed little attention to the figure. The man paid no attention to them either, he only lowered his head a little as they passed, hindering his face from being visible except for his light blonde hair and hat. Vladimir watched him curiously until the vehicles drove out of view.

A few minutes dragged by and the platoon came to a halt in the middle of a large intersection, the engines idled and soon shut off. A constant low-pitched sound was heard over the area, like a sound of moaning. The Abrams turret circled around ninety degrees, scanning the area with the thermal sights. The commander motioned that nothing came up, the lead Bradley started its engine back up and the others did the same, they continued on and soon found themselves in a cramped area. Apartment buildings rose at least five stories high on each side. The sounds from the vehicles became even louder as they echoed off the corridors in between countless alleys and side streets. The few Infected in the area immediately took notice, a few ear-splitting screams spread over the platoon, they readied their weapons. Within mere seconds the alleys were clambering with small lines of Infected, the Abrams fired a round at the largest group and millions of bits of body parts and blood flew in every direction.

5.56mm shells littered the ground, mixed with .50 cal machine gun rounds and a whole lot of greenish blood. The Bradleys were still laying down countless shots of 30mm ammunition. The Abrams was stationary, the crew had sheltered down inside to keep out the scrambling Infected. The fight wasn't going in the troops' favor, Infected were crawling up the sides of the APCs and finally the lead troops gave the order to move. The caterpillar tracks lurched forward, tens of Infected were one-by-one pulled under the vehicles and crushed with horrible and nauseating bone crunches and screams. Vladimir opened the hatch of the lead Bradley to look out, the trail of bodies behind them could have been mistaken for a zombie pancake. The large crowd of Infected that were still alive were painstakingly trying to climb up onto the tanks with negative results. Vladimir picked off stragglers that tried to run. The Abrams was still partially covered in living Infected that were holding on for dear life, most were dismembered with limbs missing and some of them even pulled in half by the vehicle's tracks. The commander of the Abrams rose out of the hatch and began shooting them all with a sidearm. Eventually every Infected on the tank was either dead or fallen off.

Vladimir was virtually covered from the waist down in Infected blood and guts. He separated himself from the non-immune soldiers in the platoon to clean himself off. The platoon itself had come to rest on a beach in Northern Alderney. Luckily the water was mostly clean of the Infection, the only problem left was the salt, it rendered it immediately undrinkable and the soldiers had to resort to their one-gallon canteens stored in the lead Bradley. The sun was beginning to set, and soon the Infected would become even more active under the cover of night.
