Dystopia (Forum Game Summary and Sign-up)

I've had this story in the back of my pocket for a long time, and now I've finally gotten off my lazy ass to produce it as a forum game. Here's the Concept:

Some of you might have played the Gears of War series, and may know about the Pendulum Wars that goes with that backstory. The Pendulum Wars is a very good example for similarities to this Story.

The setting that this story takes place in is not Earth. It takes place in an entirely different universe. This is where the Gears of War similarity kicks in. The setting still has similar culture, language, technology, weaponry, etc. But not the same nations, continents, etc. The era is post-industrial, with somewhat futuristic technology. Not flying cars and ray guns or anything like that, but relatively post-modern. The year is 2045.

Here's a map of the world, for reference:



The story behind this world is that one large, powerful country has started to annex and claim nations around itself. The powerful empire is oppressive, with a strong and loyal military, and annexed nations under their rule are often brutalized. The nations not yet annexed either grouped together in a union, made deals with the empire, or were too far out of the way to be a concern. This oppression has also incited insurgencies within the empire to attack, in an attempt to liberate their old countries. This story will overlap with different conflicts between multiple factions, which will now be listed here.

Here's a list of the Nations, and their backstories.

The Kovian Empire - Main superpower of the World(Think of Rome, the Ottomans, etc), inhabiting the largest continent of Forth. They believe in a world united under one banner, and for this purpose, have annexed other nations around them. The Kovian Empire is a monarchy, led by Emperor Roland VII. Royal family members are either assigned to govern annexed capitals, or they command troops in the war. Their capital city is Regis, and their largest city is Oasis. Their main conflict is with the Union of Independent States, which banded together to hold off the Kovian Military. They are deadlocked in trench warfare along the borders of Eos. They also face interference from the Red Flag Insurgency in Oasis, and New Haven pirates. Constructed a deal with the Kingdom of Tresa, to be provided with resources and heavy weaponry.

Union of Independent States(UIS)- The UIS(similar to our EU) are the second largest country in the World, inhabiting the continent of Eos. Their elected President Alan Krory, has kept their nation together in their current crisis. They currently have their backs against the wall, being pushed into the North-Western corners of Eos. They have managed to halt the Kovian advance and bring everything to a standstill.

Red Flag Insurgency - The Red Flag is a rebel faction within the Kovian Empire, made up of former soldiers and ancestors from the Kovian, Sol, and Vienland militaries. They have taken it upon themselves to liberate the city of Oasis, which was once Sol's capital before they lost the war with the Kovians. Oasis is the Kovian Empire's largest city, and while it is host to the guerrilla warfare, the city still maintains a military police, low and high residential sectors, marketing district, military academy, and government building. The RF Insurgents are led by former Kovian colonel Alexander Graham.

Kingdom of Tresa - Independent kingdom that inhabits the continent of the same name off the eastern coast of Forth. They have kept a neutral stance, with the exception of selling raw ore, resources, and heavy weaponry to the Kovian Empire in exchange for sovereignty. They refuse to cooperate with the UIS or the Red Flag so that they won't risk ruining relations with the Kovians.

New Haven Pirates - The remnants of a conquered nations navy, belonging to their nation of Omoi. After their capital, Haven, was taken and renamed by the Kovians, their navy fled and founded New Haven in the Isles south of Forth. Being distant from the mainland, they were able to set up shop as a nation of pirates and mercenaries. They often steal from Kovian merchant ships, and offer their mercenary services to the UIS and Red Flag.

The Fringe - An isolated nation living far north in the tundra, these people are highly isolationist, and hostile to anyone outside their own group of people. They live in steel bunkers under the ice, hidden in snowstorms. Their soldiers wear heavy armor and breather helmets, and are difficult to find in the snow.

Vienland - A nation annexed and conquered by the Kovians. The region they inhabit is a large sprawling desert, with major cities being located along the coastline.

Technology:

HoloComm - A wrist-attached piece of tech that displays video, audio, and file storage. Works like a glove, but when activated, a blue holographic frame covers the wearer's arm. (Works similar to the RIG from Dead Space)

Volt Gauntlets - A specially developed hand-to-hand weapon designed by Icarus Technologies, the same group that designs weaponry in Tresa. They are compatible with the HoloComm glove, and emit an electric shockwave when coming into contact with an opponent. Commonly used by Kovian, Red Flag, Fringe, and New Haven military, but the UIS and Tresa armies have been known to use them.

Vehicles - Tanks, humvees, APC's, etc. Pretty much the same stuff we have today. For air vehicles, helicopters are in the universe, but jets and bombers are not(Sorry Kiwi).

Weapons -

For the purpose of the fact that this is not Earth, and guns are obviously not the same, I'm going to do something similar to how Mass Effect does it's weapons. Put a letter in front, a number, and then name a kind of weapon.

This World is full of conflict between different factions, with different ideals. The only difference between utopia and dystopia is perception, and that is an important theme of the story.

Do you side with the Kovians, who fight to make one world order, with loyalty to the Emperor? The UIS, who only want to defend what is theirs? The Red Flag, who want freedom for their home? Or even the pirates. It's up to you. Think about your character and what they want to stand for in this story.

Occupation: Fringe Ranger
History: Born in Bunker 02 in the year 2021, Aleksei was raised on the basis of isolationism and seclusion. Although being raised on these traditions, he never adhered to them. And as such, began to wonder of the lands to the south of the tundra. When he came to age he enlisted into the fringe's military, excelling in reconnaissance. After training he volunteered for the Fringe Ranger course; the toughest AIT program in the fringe. He graduated 10 weeks later and was transferred to the Rangers on the surface.

Rangers are seen somewhat as legends among the Fringe's military. They're considered the best of the best when it comes to scouting and reconnaissance, and only accept the best because of it. Instead of calling one of the many underground bunkers in the Fringe their home, the Rangers main base of operations lies on the surface. A fortification named "Praetoria".

Occupation: Captain, Kovian Navy. Commander of the KES Ambition.
History: Born in 2002 in the city of Regis. Bradley looked up to his father who was an Admiral in the Kovian Navy and decided that that's what he wanted to do when he came of age. So when he was 21 he enlisted and quickly started to rise through the ranks, serving on multiple ships such as the KES Serenity, KES Chimera, and the KES Razor's Edge. At age 43 he achieved the rank of Captain and was given the command of the newly christened Destroyer, the KES Ambition. Now, Capt. Grey and the Ambition have been assigned to Task Force 6595 which has been placed along the southern coast of Forth to protect merchant convoys from the New Haven Pirates.

History: Brother was killed, but he got over that quick and joined the Red Flag when the leader, Hugo Davies, just walked up to him and said "Well, I guess you're in the Red Flag now."
Appearance: Shaved head and five'o'clock shadow, wears a big yellow duster and a red gaiter. Sews small pieces of scrap metal onto his coat, which allows him to take ungodly amounts of assault rifle fire to the face, as well as blow up big ass fuel tanks with a hammer and be fine.

History: All throughout his childhood and adolescence, Walker despised the news reports of the Kovian Empire expanding and engulfing everything in sight as if it were theirs by birthright. At the age of 19 he joined the UIS Police Force, where he served 6 years in total (3 as a uniformed officer, 3 as a plainclothes officer). On the first day of Krory's presidency a Kovian Spy was arrested by Walker with the assistance of a UIS Military Intelligence Operative. The same operative offered to give Walker a shot at joining Military Intelligence 3 months later. Which brings us to the present day, UIS Military Intelligence Operative S. Walker has been with the organisation for 9 years.
He is currently on a joint operation with SAD Stalker Teams 1 and 3.

Occupation: Hotel Owner

History: Dominic never wanted much in life, just a nice place to sleep, an entertaining way to pass the time and good food and drink. He's lived all his life in Siarside, and is perfectly content to keep it that way. In his younger years, he toiled away as a crew member on a fishing vessel, hoping to one day save up enough money to start his own business. Due to his wise investing and penny-pinching nature, he finally achieved his dream eleven years ago when he had his hotel "Sleep Inn" built.

He sold his old home to help pay for the Sleep Inn's construction, and has taken to living in the top floor Royal Suite of the inn. He doesn't have any family left; his parents died some time ago, and he lost his wife Isabelle to ovarian cancer five years ago (they never had children). Now he spends his time focused on running his hotel. His staff may think of it as just a job, but for Dominic, it's a dream. He holds regular meetings with the staff to try and keep them enthused, and tries to maintain a friendly and not overly formal relationship with his workers. He likes to keep the hotel in good condition, and the guests happy and entertained, though not at the expense of his employees. While the hotel has a modest security staff, Dominic prefers them to remain passive, simply preventing violence and contacting the authorities. He'd prefer to let the police deal with unruly customers, since having his security throw them out on the street would seem brutish and would spoil the hotel's image. Dominic gladly hosts Red Flag insurgents, although he does so discreetly, due to his disdain for the oppressive Kovian Empire.

Appearance: Tries his best to dress well without spending absurd amounts of money. Wears a light gray suit, with a light gray undershirt and a large variety of tie colors. Prefers green and pink ties, due to their friendly appearance. Wears a HoloComm discretely under his left sleeve, which is used to track the day to day operations of the hotel. Has short gray hair, which he keeps neatly combed. He shaves regularly with a straight razor (tee hee) and keeps a pocket-watch. Has hazel eyes, and is Caucasian. Wears ordinary black leather belts, with a normal buckle that's made of matte stainless steel, and round tipped lusterless black shoes, which are rugged enough to be considered work shoes but classy enough to count as dress shoes. He is about 5'11'', and is relatively slim, though not so devoid of muscles he can't open a jar or lift a heavy box.

Born 2015, daniel spent his chilhood in suclusion, his father was in the fridge military and daniel always looked up to him. He would always return from an operation and tell daniel about his adventure, sometimes even bring back bullet casings or other souverniers. one day, daniels father didnt return and after spending three days by the door waiting for him daniel finally accepted that his father wasnt coming back. when he turned 18 daniel joined the military and quicky rose through the ranks, by 23 he was commanding his own company, but daniel didnt want a desk job, so instead of a premotion he joined the rangers.

History:When he was young he enlisted into the kovian military academy and graduated 3rd in his class. Throughout the years he worked as best as he could and provided some key strategies that would help conquer Omoe, thus giving him the rank of captain. he eventually left the army as he felt the need to chase his dream of being an actor. Ryan had a very rough time attempting to live in the kovian empire as he moved into the annexed city of Oasis. He was harassed daily by the troops not knowing at all who he was, but he finally was able to find somewhat of a peaceful time as he married a lady he met frequently. As he started to gain fame in Oasis it started to tear him apart; He started taking a drug called Omadium(similar to cocaine) to cope with the stress. Which caused him to divorce his wife and make his used to be large fame dwindle. He eventually had some friends help him recover from the addiction with rehab and he is starting to do more films. Then the red flag insurgency showed themselves to the public eye. He then starred in a film about the insurgency depicting them as heroes, which caused the empire to want to take them out for promoting them. He then joined the insurgency as they attacked Oasis and helped them liberate it.

Occupation: Mercenary for Hire
History: Adrian grew up in New Haven, being born shortly after Omoi was annexed by the Kovian Empire. His parents were of Vienish decent, but lived in Omoi as ship-builders. Adrian's family ended up being founding members of the harbor in New Haven. When Adrian matured, he became trained as a soldier and a merchant. At age 21, he left New Haven for the mainland, and works as a mercenary for many groups. During a combat operation near UIS borders, Adrian took a small hit of shrapnel to his right eye, causing him to go blind with that eye. He has fought on the side of Red Flag, UIS, and occasionally for Kovian citizens, and because of this, he is often recalled as a Turncoat. He currently is residing in Siarside, Vienland, trying to find work.

Occupation: Major in the 2nd Legion
History: Major Dai is a native to Tresa, but immigrated to Forth at a very young age. Tresans often coincide with Kovian citizens, and are treated with equal standing. When he came of age to join the Kovian Legion, he joined almost immediately, feeling a deep sense of pride for his nation. He graduated from basic training at age 19, and became a sergeant at age 21. Seigi fought in multiple campaigns against the UIS, and in the conflict with the Fringe Rangers far to the North. Because of his experience and his resolve, he was promoted to major at age 30. He now commands a company of soldiers in the 2nd Legion on the Trench against the UIS.

History: Born in 2013 on the eastern frontier of The Fringe, native to an unmentionable forgotten Fringian tribe located in the 2017 ventures of Bunker 02. Jericho lived five years of unaware simplicity among any other eastern savage in the eastern Fringe. Jericho was absorbed into the isolationist dystopia following the progress reports from experimental projects, produced from the preserved savages that were adopted from the 2018 genocides.

Progress report 01, 3/7/2018: [Prof. Dinst] "Progress report one, July seventh, twenty-eighteen. Forces from the eastern frontier have captured and imported one subject from each of the remaining eastern tribes, with a total of five. Info claims, uh, four males, one female. Male's approximate ages are nine, seventeen, nineteen, and twenty-three. Female's approximate age is twenty-eight, though our examinations will provide more information. Subjects are in sterilization process and will be delivered to separate living spaces within the hour. Examination begins tomorrow."

Progress report 02, 3/8/2018: [Prof. Dinst] "Progress report two, July eighth, twenty-eighteen. Observation reports insomnia for almost all subjects, excluding the female. Young male, number one, tampered with room's tap and bedscrews through the night. Whilst the female, number five, fainted sideways upon her bed from stress or otherwise. Numbers two, three, and four all chanted and swayed sitting upright on their beds throughout the night in an unintelligible native language. All subjects appear healthy excluding number three whom showed signs of a stomach cramp of some kind. Subjects will be removed from their rooms and all placed into an examination room momentarily.

[Cont.d] *Subjects enter examination room, number one sits down in a cross-legged fashion and picks at the floor tiles. Numbers two, three, and four continue the chant in a semi-circle protruding from the observation glass pane. Number five sits near the door she had entered through and picks at her scalp. Prof. Dinst prepares to speak into the observation room's microphone.*

[Prof. Dinst] "Hello?"

*Subjects stutter at the abrupt noise, subjects two, three, and four discontinue the chant and look around the room for a source. All but subjects two, four and five actually discover the PA system.*

[Prof. Dinst] "Do, uhh, do you understand English? People?"

*Subjects two, four, and five suggest that the noise is coming from the other subjects. Subjects two, four, and five begin to feel insecure in the presence of their fellow subjects. Subjects one and three remain silent and stare at the PA system.*

[Prof. Dinst] "I'd like you to respond, people."

*Subjects two, four, and five frantically jog and make gestures at eachother in a circle of paranoia. Subject one and three sit parallel to one another across the room.*

[Prof. Dinst] "Is that your response? I'd like you to calm down, stop jumping around, and whatever that is. I'm going to go get a coffee, everybody calm down."

*Subject four makes a suggestive jab at subject two, subject five also makes a jab at subject two. Subject two responds in throwing his arms in a state of panic, similar to a threatened monkey. Subjects four approaches subject two and kicks him in the abdomen, subject two winces in pain and retreats to the floor. Subject five begins kicking, scratching, and biting subject two.*

*Subject three trances in a state of euphoria and begins thrusting his crotch against the wall, subject one has since covered his face with his arms. Subject four and five continue performing a number of violent acts on subject two. Subject two has a number of injuries such as bleeding bite marks covering his shoulders, broken legs and ribs, with torn ligaments surrounding his body from constant pulling of subject five.*

*While Subject two is producing blood-curdling screams, subject four delivers a crushing stomp to the inside of subject two's mouth, splitting his cheeks open, knocking out several teeth, and ultimately snapping subject two's jaw from his skull. Subject five kneels down and grabs each side of subject two's mouth, pulling each palate from each other. Subject has long passed out from intense pain, and will soon die.*

*Subject one continues to cover his face, but now rocking forward and backward in a state of extreme fright. Subject three has begun smashing his head against the metal wall, and has produced an indent in his skull, that bleeds more and more profusely with each impact.*

[Prof. Dinst] "Okay I'm hoping you've all ca - WHAT IN THE NAME OF OH-TWO IS GOING IN HERE?!"

*Subjects four and and five stand up from the soon to decease subject two, and begin chanting in the tribal language. They later begin a tribal ritual by ingesting a small amount of subject two's blood splattered on their bodies long ago. Subjects four and five gesture their hands in a bent "thumbs up" position. Then continue to place their hands on the face of the other subject. Subjects four and five dig their thumbs deep inside the eyes of the other, blood rains profusely from each subject's eyes. Subject's four and five give a final impulse of the tribal ritual, and drop to the ground with grinded, bloody eyes, neurologically deceased, but with a few final twitches to mark their descent into some fake deity's playground. Prof. Dinst has called security.*

[Prof. Dinst] "GO! GO! HURRY!"

*Subjects four, five, and two lay in a heap of blood and gore, along with subject three whom has knocked himself unconscious, with blood pouring from a puncture in his cranium. Subject one lifts his arms for a peek of the scene, witnesses the horror, and tears begin pouring from his eyes. But with no wailing, as it would be useless to cry. A security team rushes in through a separate door from the subject's entry doors and begin securing the area, needless to say the only thing they need to secure is a psychologically scarred five year old, whom is removed from the premises, that of which now consisted of four dead bodies.*

Jericho was introduced into a psychological recovery process after the observatory scenario, through some kind of pity or otherwise from Bunker 02. And with no luck seeing as he didn't understand English. He sat through each recovery session as he did through the observatory, arms crossed over his head, blocking out what he didn't want to be a part of.

By 2025, at age twelve, Jericho was extremely fluent with English through a language program given to him by his English tutor, he found the program more helpful than the tutor herself. And ran the program in his holding cell multiple times a day to bide his time. The last seven years had been repetitive, and his days consisted of even more simplicity than those living in Bunker 02. It was constant education in history, science, mechanics, mathematics, and other subjects provided by Bunker 02 through their archives, and furthermore the living provisions that his cell had given.

Bunker 02 didn't intend to do anything with Jericho, just provide a decent lifestyle past that of tribal living. And out of pity for a five year-old whom witnessed something that most adults shouldn't see. And by 2033, they had observed Jericho well past the intention of the 2018 experiments. He was nineteen when Bunker 02 authorities decided that they should cease the isolationism inside an already isolationist community. And gave permission to Jericho to roam the entirety of Bunker 02 under the circumstance that he did not attempt to escape. Jericho accepted, as staring at four walls and the occasional tutor through a slit in the only door to freedom for fifteen years had long ago gotten old.

By 2039, Jericho was twenty-five years old, and had integrated well into the rest of the Bunker. Along with research from his early educations and an additional six years of engineering education, Jericho was called to the engineering district of Bunker 02. An important deployment as the entirety of Bunker 02 relied on constant maintenance, and an opportunity to pull Jericho's own weight around Bunker 02, and potentially pay back the luxuries given to him all those years. He had received much prejudice because of his integration, but it waved thin soon after a speech given by Prof. Dinst to accept Jericho into Bunker 02's community.

In late 2044, Jericho was an adept engineer and had well earned his place in Bunker 02's ranks. He had been well recognized for troubleshooting an air-circulation malfunction in 2041, preventing evacuation and possible relocation for Bunker 02's residents. In the past four years, he had received education in combat, weapon use, and tactics after granted permission for military service from the Bunker's authorities. As Jericho had potentially saved the bunker, there was no known initiative for him to destroy the bunker either. He'd served on three missions for demolition emplacements and one reconnaissance mission from 2043 to the present day. Present day, Jericho serves Bunker 02's military as a sapper and reconnaissance man. He resides within his cot in the living district of Bunker 02.

Do the Kovians have any sort of Detective like positions dedicated to rooting out Red Flag insurgents and such? Or do they just leave that stuff to local police, or what?

When it comes to dealing with domestic threats(i.e. Red Flag, NHP, etc.), Military Police are running the show, with the exception of Oasis, which is practically under siege. The Empire, UIS, and Tresan governments have intel agents.

If you want to be some sort of investigator for the Kovian MP, then go for it.
