Re: The Walking Dead (General Thread)
When Rick was having the weird zone-out thing, I had expected him to grand-slam his daughter into prison's concrete floors and have her explode like a box of tomatoes dropped from orbit.
Better luck next Sunday.

"Expected" and "Hoped" are synonymous in this case, and are both correct.

Expecting is to believe a scenario is going to play out. Hoping is to believe that a scenario is going to play out a specific way. You think I'm some kind of baby killer? You sick fuck?
Exempting the whole better luck next Sunday thing, I can't wait until that baby dies.

Expecting is believing a scenario is going to play out, but hoping is wanting a scenario to play out. IE if the New Jersey Douches and the Virginia Meerkats are at the superbowl, and the Douches are a better team, I'll expect them to win. But if I like the Meerkats better, I'll hope for them to win. Not necessarily synonymous.

Cry to Vrazzle and Jag then, I'm not the one who dicked around with my post.
- Spoiler:
- The baby dies in the comics, I expect the baby to die in the Television series. But I also think that baby's don't belong in the zombie apocalypse, so I'm also hoping for it to die. Synonymous enough for you now?

That's not synonymous. The context doesn't change the definition.

Re: The Walking Dead (General Thread)
It's low enough on the list that it's just a vaguely related word. Same with mirage. Mirage isn't a direct synonym for hope, and neither is expect, they're just vaguely related. Basically, just because someone is hoping for something doesn't mean they're expecting it, and vice-versa.

Re: The Walking Dead (General Thread)
expecting literally means something different than hope and the two words are only loosely related
expecting means that you believe that there is an above average probability of a certain thing happening
hoping means that you want the certain thing to happen, regardless of the odds
expecting means that you believe that there is an above average probability of a certain thing happening
hoping means that you want the certain thing to happen, regardless of the odds
- Spoiler:
- what Apoc said wasn't wrong because he both hopes for a certain thing to happen and realizes, due to reading the source material, that the certain thing is likely to happen. thus he hopes and expects it to happen.
the phrase "hope for the best but expect the worst" is probably the clearest way to see the difference

I've come to the realization that if a secondary character has the spotlight on them a tad, they're guaranteed to die.

Whoa, was not expecting that episode
*Comic spoilers below*
*Comic spoilers below*
- Spoiler:
- Since the Prison arc in the comics ends with the governor flushing out Rick's group, I thought we wouldnt see any prison action till the last episode of the season. Axel dies in the Prison so it didn't bother me the way he died but I'm tired of the way many characters get killed off. Hey lets give someone else the spotlight right before they die!...it's pretty stupid.
Anyway, good episode.

Re: The Walking Dead (General Thread)
This show is kind of strange to me. It has some legendary source material, and it could be amazing, but it feels lazy and its execution is terrible. The entire show is just one episode after another of mediocrity. It's not the worst show in the world but it's far from good.
- Spoiler:
- The last episode really annoyed me with how Axel was handled. It's so formulaic. Give a character a spotlight, then they die. +1 if it's a black character.
That being said, the gunfight between the Governor's group and Rick's group was so stupid. I can't believe that two groups of people armed with heavy weaponry can fire hundreds of bullets, only killing one person on either side, when everyone on both sides remained stationary the entire time.
Also, I'm glad that the guy who rammed the fences was polite enough to smash the gate which can be easily repaired rather than try to damage the outer fences which can't.

- Spoiler:
- I found it even more silly when they have improbable aiming skills which allow them to accurately headshot zambies walking around anywhere from 50 to 100 feet away while they're driving vehicles moving near 30mph. They never missed. This is only damn near impossible. To compare, armor also needs to perform this similar 'one-shot hit' kind of fighting, but a tank driving over anything other than a parade ground will dive, shake, and move with the ground. Only now with laser rangefinders, turret stabilization systems, and ballistic computers can tanks even attempt to fire a round moving at 30mph. These guys did it with their eyes. Yeah.
That's the kind of gunfight that's realistic: Hundreds of rounds fired, not many casualties. The 'one death on each side' is planned, but if you were going to have a gunfight, that was the way to do it. After all, I thought their raid on Woodbury was highly improbable. Woodbury had a defense force at least twenty-thirty strong. Their raider group managed to kill probably fifteen of those mooks before losing ANYONE. I honestly thought they were going to kill off half of the group in that episode.

- Spoiler:
- I'd argue that with the precedence set that they have the ability to pull off amazing headshots on zombies while in moving vehicles, it's really improbable that they couldn't kill more than one Woodbury raider. But yeah, I agree, the whole thing was improbable and done poorly.
The Governor raid was done better in the comic, though since this raid didn't end the prison arc I'm not sure if it's analogous to the comic raid, which left several in the group dead and most of the Woodbury attackers destroyed.
Comic Spoilers:
The saving grace in the comic, IIRC, was a few well placed grenades, Andrea sniping, and Michonne flanking the Woodbury attackers and assassinating the Governor.

- All of the firefights in the show so far have actually made me LOL. Also on the note of headshotting zombies, i think its really funny that so far in the show, i dont think anyone has missed a single shot on a zombie. Where as they missed about 99/100 shots on other living people.
